After Cain killed his brother Abel, God said, “The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground” (Genesis 4:10). The blood was crying, “Justice! Justice! I want justice!” God responded by sentencing Cain to a life of being a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth. After Jesus was killed, His blood also began speaking. However, rather than crying for justice, His blood cries for mercy. “Mercy! Mercy! Give them mercy!” God responds by granting forgiveness to those who believe.
The writer to the Hebrews compares the cry of Abel’s blood with the cry of Jesus’ blood. “You have come … to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel” (Hebrews 12:24). What a blessing we have to come to this crying blood.
