There are many who seek to be justified by their works. All you need to do to disturb such people is to ask, “Are you sure that’s enough?”
To those who require a certain acceptable standards of dress, you can ask, “Are you sure that’s enough?” To those who require total abstinence from alcohol or movies or playing cards, you can ask, “Are you sure that’s enough?” To those who restrict your Bible reading to a certain version, you can ask, “Are you sure that’s enough?” It doesn’t matter what standard for righteousness is given, you can always place doubts with this little question, because there is no end in sight of seeking to obtain enough righteousness. They can never be sure that they have done enough.
A faith in Christ, however, is entirely different. Since those who believe in Him are justified apart from works, we have can have confidence that we have enough. “We maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law” (Romans 3:28). One may ask, “Are you sure that’s enough?” We say, “Yes! Upon the cross, Jesus said, ‘It is finished!’ (John 19:30). Jesus accomplished our redemption. By faith in Him, we are fully reconciled to God. The road ends at the cross.”
We who believe this can live in joy, gladly serving our Lord.
