I pulled out an old songbook that my wife and I put together in 1999. It’s called, “Singing the Psalms.” It’s comprised of all the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134) put to music (plus a few more). We used to sing these songs often with our children, but probably haven’t done so for a decade.
Anyway, my daughter saw the booklet and proceeded to plunk out the songs on the piano, remembering every single one of them.
My point? Music is a help to memory. It’s important that the songs we sing in church are doctrinally strong and theologically robust, as we will remember them for years to come.
