In yesterday’s newspaper, we received an 80 page catalog from Toys “R” Us. It came just in time–right as the Halloween shopping season is coming to an end and as the Christmas shopping season begins. It’s filled with gift ideas for our children.
My wife usually throws these things out. However, our younger children saw it before she was able to get her hands on it. They have spent quite a bit of time looking at it and longing for the toys they see and telling us of their heart’s desire to have these toys (many of which they didn’t even know existed). My wife has simply called it “The Covet Catalog.”
The catalog hasn’t created the coveting desire. It has merely exposed the existing longing in the heart to desire the things of the world. Paul wrote, “I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, ‘You shall not covet.’ But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind” (Romans 7:7-8). My prayer is that our children would see their sin and run to the Savior.
